In Episode 3 of Wine About the Weather, we introduce my good friend Adam Suprenant, who owns his own wine company, but also works for the legendary Osprey’s Dominion Vineyard.
Osprey’s Dominion Vineyards is located on Long Island’s North Fork.
Ninety acres of vinifera grapes grow under the watchful eye of the soaring Osprey, the vineyard’s namesake. Their state-of-the-art winery shows their commitment to fine winemaking.
Osprey’s Dominion originally planted on 24 acres in Peconic in 1983. An additional 16 acre parcel in Mattituck was purchased and planted in the late 1980’s, but it wasn’t until the early 90’s, when they purchased 50 acres of land and buildings at their present Main road location in Peconic, that they began producing and selling the Osprey brand. In 2012, their entire Richmond Creek second label was introduced to compliment the Osprey line.
Although the Long Island wine region is located at approximately the same latitude as the great wine growing regions of France, at Osprey’s Dominion they truly believe their location (being surrounded, yet sheltered, by both the LI Sound and Peconic Bay) and the complexity of the farming soil here, contribute significantly to the quality and character of our grapes, and hence, their wines.
Their overall philosophy is to produce the best wines with the least interference from humankind. They believe that our unique location, soil complexity and Mother Nature give us something different to work with each year, and it is their job and vocation to develop what they’ve been given, into the very best it can be. Their ‘Reserve’ wines are produced only in those years where the right conditions of sun and rain can give us what they need to make a truly great wine. They create our wines to please the most discerning palates.
