Rich Olseb-Harbich is the winemaker at Bedell Cellars but is also the founder of the Long Island Sustainable Winegrowing Initiative . It was really neat to talk with him and to see his passion for what he is promoting, which is clean water, among other things. He maintains, and rightly so, that farming can be done using what the earth provides us. Don’t fight Mother Nature, in other words.
Rich also knows our pal John Santos, who you may remember from episode 2 of Wine About the Weather, is the sustainability-minded vineyard manager at Hazlitt 1852.
It is apparent to me, at least now that I’m a third of the way through our season of Wine About the Weather, that the wine industry in New York is full of smart, like-minded folks who share a common goal.
